Sodium Bicarb is used even today to relieve a "gassy" stomach,or heart burn as the general public refers to.
Sodium Bicarb is nothing more than Baking Soda mixed into a glass of water,a home remedy that is suppose to help when the stomach hurts from bad food or indigestion.

they mean bicarb soda which is sodium hydrogen carbonate in chemical terms..
