The Constitution likely would not have been ratified by the states had it not been amended by the Bill of Rights - the anti-Federalists disliked the Constitution in its original form and demanded a set of amendments as safeguards of personal liberties.

well all i can say is that it was originally written at the time of when there wsa a conflict between the federalists + anti-feds (1787) that threatened the Constitution's ratification...it was also influenced by george mason's 1776 VIRGINIA DECLARATION OF RIGHTS, the 1689 English Bill of Rights, works of the Age of Enlightenment pertaining to natural rights, and earlier English political documents such as the Magna Carta (1215).
