I,m looking a software package to be able produce notes for coursework for mathematics. the package would ideally be able to produce formulae, equations and also plot, edit various graphs and add text for notes. A free download would be nicer still as i am a poor student after all.

Try Open Office 2.0. It's compatible and roughly equivalent to Microsoft Office and has a Spreadsheet and a Wordprocessing application (as well as Database and Presentation modules)

You should be able to create good looking formulae in the Word Processor and plot graphs (and perform calculations) in the Spreadheet app.

It is freeware, in other words free to download and use.

Click where you want to insert the equation.
On the Insert menu, click Object, and then click the Create New tab.

Microsoft word has equation editor but there is an independent, enhanced version of this available called MathType. For plots and graphs sigmaplot should do the trick. Both have free trial versions so if you work fast that might work for you.

Hope this helps
