Show up at a "cattle call". They're published in Variety and also in local newspapers where a movie company will be filming. Most of the work is as an extra. Pay isn't great and the working conditions can be horrible but it is interesting to see how things work.
I've done this several times, in CA, MA and in Europe. Got to meet a few stars, trudged around in a lot of mud and cow patties and ate some pretty terrible food but had a good time and met some interesting folks.

Sometimes on the radio or news you can catch certain production of filming in the area and they may be looking for extras. Most people sign up with a talent agency in their city. Try checking around for some local and reliable talent agencies and always do a background check on the company to make sure that they are not scam artist. You may want to read up on this site, this may help! Good Luck!!

It's really complicated. I've been trying for years, now. You need an agent, and then that agent will tell you where casting calls are, and you go try-out. Once you try-out they'll call you back or send you packing. If you get called back, you try-out again, and this time you either win or lose. If you get the part, then you're in the movie. But if you lose, then your agent starts looking for more work. It's not cheap either. The agents are really expensive, and for a company to send casting calls is about $5.00 a week. Good luck!! I hope I get to act with you one day.

I use to work for a major film company. It's not easy. There are two options that I know of, Go to casting calls they are in Variety, Craiglist , myspace. Or if you know someone who is making and independent film, like a film student you can try with them. Most of them are shown at the film festival. Its huge now the independent films, the company I use to work for opened a department just for this. This is a subject that we are all looking into ourselves.
