So far, I would suggest that the results have not been any better yet, but the organisation and tactical awareness is much better than 1990 and 1994. Ivory Coast look like a side who could hold their own in any other group in the tournament, whilst Angola looked overawed to begin and then held Portugal comfortably.
Partially I believe this is due to the increasing migration of African players to a broader spread of European leagues, which has led to a greater awareness of wider tactical and organisational philosophies.
Partially exposure to the international stage has increased dramatically in the last 20 years, as more and more African nations qualify for the World Cup, and get involved in more friendlies against non-African opposition.
It remains to be seen at this World Cup whether the fact that all of the sub-Saharan teams are debutants will negate this effect - it seems to not too pronounced

So far, they haven't won a match, but Ghana, Togo, and Tunisia haven't played yet. They'll have a way to go to match Senegal making the quarters in 2002, Nigeria winning a group in 1998 and 1994 (though they lost in the Round of 16 both times), and Cameroon winning a group and making the quarters in 1990.

Actually no . Well you can put up the fact that more and more european clubs are interested in players, but how is that affecting the national side. African players can play all wonderful in Europe but back home their nations dont necessarily do that. A classic example is George Weah , he is possibly the greatest African player ever. He won Fifa World Footballer award, but his country Liberia never made it to WC. Another contrast will be Roger Milla , the man never played in Europe but look what he has done in WC ! And performance wise it has not changed much . In 1982 Cameroone managed to hold off Italy. Tunisia won in 1986. Camaroone beat Argentina, Colombia in 1990 , reached the quarter finals. In 1994 Nigeria beat Bulgaria & Greece to move to 2nd round. Again in 1998 Nigeria beat Spain & Bulgaria to reach 2nd round. Similarly in 2002 Senegal beat France & Sweden to reach quarter finals. But notice one thing in all these tournament ONLY ONE african team has done well others have been poor. In 1994 Camaroone lost all matches including 6-1 to Russia, in 1998, Tunisia , Camaroone failed to win a match. Similarly in 2002 Nigeria & camaroone were poor. So it has not changed much .

Yes they are. Many African players have been recognized by European clubs and are playing for them. This experience will help them tremendously in the World Cup but don't expect a winner from Ã
frica..at least not in 2006.

Of course. . . .it certainly has to do with the fact that there are now more African players that feature in all the world class leagues(premiership, la liga. . .)
Allowing them to take that experience back home, and that, combined with their drive and hunger to succeed, makes them even better than before!
Ivory Coast is one of my favourites.I am very sad that Cameroon didn't qualify though :'-(
I'll be praying non stop for ANY African team to make it to the quarter finals(at the very least). . .then maybe semi-finals. . .and then finals. . . .
