Definitely the villian... The villians usually stir up the viewers' interest and makes the plot more interesting than when having the hero go oh-so-smooth-sailing in life.

I say when a hero fights the odds... The world today has many villains that return in some way shape or form at all of us...and we constantly have to deal with those...whether it be as simple as bills or as serious as disease...So we are constantly battling the odds...so when a hero fights the odds...somewhere inside of us I think it gives us hope

The villains do have resiliency just look at the Bush clan. Prescott charged with trading with the enemy in WW2.. King George Bush the 1st rejected after one term. King George Bush 2nd still fighting a war regardless of the casualties and lack of planning. These people are no flip floppers they follow their initial instincts right or wrong no matter how many poor folks have to suffer. The Bush clan , real super men, Uber men even.

It is always good to see the hero fight the odds, although I like the villain to return for one more encore performance to see our hero in action again.

It depends because not all villains and heroes are alike and this question is very general. Some stories are great when it is one way OR the other.
