Going on current estimations on the assumption that our sun is a normal main sequence star, the sun should start to become a red giant in approximately 5 billion years from now.

About 5 billion years before the Sun is completely gone, apart from a pretty planetary nebula with a white dwarf at its centre, so it'll swell to our orbit several million years before that. By then, the Earth would have long vaporated as the Sun became bloated.

Some people in the scientific community believe the Sun will be measurably redder within 500 million years.

the sun wont become a red giant but there r evidences tht the temperature of sun will drop due to the presence of the 10th planet in the solar system.Anyway it will take millions of years for this to happen so sit back & relax.

It is approximately 5 billion years. The sun will be larger, but cooler as the hydrogen has begun to deplete.
