It all looks terribly complicated but I think it's not really :)

If you are under 14, you are not allowed to work at all except in the following types of work:-

* to take part in sport, advertising, modelling, plays, films, television or other entertainment. The employer must apply for a licence from the local authority
* to do odd jobs for a parent, relative or neighbour
* to do babysitting – see under heading Babysitting.

However, children of 13 or above may be able to do some other types of work, depending on the by-laws of the local authority in their area. For example, the by-laws may say that children of 13 and above in your area can do a paper-round, or that you can do light work which is not likely to be harmful to your health, safety or development.

So, although there are National guidelines, they may be varied by local by-laws. Check with your local council or job centre.

It depends what you want to do. It is 16 for full time employment(obviously because that's the legal school leaving age) but you can get a part time job from 14 or a paper round from 13.

13 years old for a paper round (or similiar). The hours you can work each week (7 days) are limited to about 3 hours, while you are between the ages of 13 and 16. You can work full time as soon as you are 16, and have left full time education.

You have to be 16 to work full time. I think you can get a part time job from 14 though. And I think about 11 or 12 if you want a paper round. I might be wrong about that though.

Strictly speaking there is no age limit. At the age of 16 you will be given a National Insurance number meaning you will pay NI against your wages earned but you could work before that and be paid cash in hand, e.g. delivering newspapers
