My wife is big on herbal remedies and takes Rescue drops by Bach. It seems they are sold under the same name in the States (we're in Europe.)
She is not depressed, nor is she under medical treatment. She occasionally takes them - like you said - for anxiety and a racing mind however, and she swears by them.
For what it's worth, she has a bunch stuff going on, and I recognize the crying and anxiety, but not the loss of appetite. Here's her story:
* She had, and occasionally has Candida when she eats poorly (one of those illneses that most doctors haven't heard of)
* She has too much metal in her body - nickel and such play havoc on the hormones. This was caused by a dislocated kidney after a nasty fall. It wasn't until after several months of clueless general practitioners that she met an osteopath who diagnosed this in 5 minutes and put things right in 5 or 6 sessions.
* she's started smoking again - bad for anyone of course, but she notices the effect in a more immediate way.
And all of this would be manageable, but when she has stressful periods at work, things seem to aggravate each other and the combined effect simply overwhelms her. She's in one of those periods now. She's lost weight, is up til 4, and can get emotional over anything. She still has this about two or three times a year for a few weeks. Frankly, we're thrilled that we now seem to have a handle on the symptoms and that most of it seems to be physical.
Anyway, the Rescue drops work for her. Give them a try.
Best wishes!

Two immediate answers come to mind:
1. Go to a health food store and ask the clerk for a natural remedy.
2. Online pharmacies sell a drug called Ativan. It is a depressant which calms one down, like Valium.
3. Plenty of vigorous exercise and a proper diet can do wonders for the body and mind.
I truly hope you find what works best for you! Good luck!

I have actually tried some over the counter meds like Valerian root and St. John's wart. However I felt absolutely nothing and ended up going on a sedative. I use it as needed and it has worked wonders. It sounds like maybe you should talk to your doctor about this.

You could try a bach flower remedy called "rescue remedy", found at a health food store.
Ativan is probably your best bet for quick results, although it is only intended for short-term use as it is addictive. You need to explore the root cause, and you will probably be able to once you control your attacks. Just be cautious not to ignore the root cause once your attacks subside. Work on getting better to make sure that you will be panic free.

I used to take mega b vitamin complex to ward off panic attacks. Do be advised that it will make your urine look like mountain dew and it can make you hot/sweat. This may help with your anxiety but I don't know about the mind racing. Classic benadryl may help you sleep. It is actually the sleep agent in Tylenol PM. I also know people who have used benadryl to treat anxiety in their dogs!
