If you live in a climate that grows azaleas-- that is your perfect match-- they love the acidic soil from the pine needles-- in fact, those of you who can get pine needles-- get them and put around your azaleas as a mulch-- they'll be much happier.

Otherwise-- the competition from the tree makes you do more to compensate-- i.e. more water, more fertilizer--
good luck

Actually impatiens would do well in acidic soils. You may even use the needles as mulch to help keep from watering so often. They perform well in shaded areas but do need some sun so if there is sun under the tree at any given time during the day you will do well. I have under my white pine; perennials, astibile, hosta, sundrops, primrose and lilies that all seem to be doing well. Water is an issue at times for me but a watering can works wonders. Is the tree cut up? By that I mean off the ground some so you can see and get under it? Happy planting!!!

Actually impatiens, astilbe and hostas will all do well in full shade i.e., no direct sunlight hitting them at any time during the day. Also hellebores, lilly of the valley and ajuga. Whatever you plant under the tree will have to compete with the tree for nutrients and water, so extra water may be required.

You can and they will most likely die.
The needles will cover the flowers and the sap from the tree will kill the plant.
