Although I am a non-smoker (as of Nov. 05), I am far from ignorant & highly qualified to answer your question. The reasons people begin smoking today may be different than when I first started more than 40 years ago. When I started, it was believed not to be unhealthy to smoke. Many medical professionals smoked & there were even ash trays in doctor's offices. It was a different time & it did make you look cool. I was in the Navy in boot camp & when we would take a break from marching, smokers sat down in the shade and lit-up. Non-smokers were often ordered to "police" the area, (pick up trash). I became a smoker for that reason. After a few months, smoking helped me "fit-in" with my new military family. But it wasn't a bad thing in those days. 30 years later I found out I couldn't stop. I told people I could stop anytime I wanted to, but I didn't because my body craved the taste. Smoking calmed my nerves, helped me relax & I seemed to be able to deal with everyday life in an easier way.
Yes, you said "..besides the addiction part?" Don't kid yourself. There is no other "part". Most long-time smokers would quit in a heartbeat. But many will put it off until there is no heartbeat.

I do smoke, been smoking for around 12 years now. I started because i was introduced to smoking by a friend and it was the cool thing to do.
Why do i continue? I have to stress that getting over the addiction is beyond tough. I tried several times but i failed miserably. Apart from the addiction, phsycological aspect makes a huge difference.
Smoking is part of my daily routine, after eating, before going to bed, during work etc.... you cant just get rid of it

I started when i was in highschool. I started the same dang way alot of kids do, because all of my friends were doing it. Peer pressure IS a B%*ch! I guess i was weak and i fell for it. Oh well, ive been smoking for 8 years now. I smoke now because, well, the addiction factor, but also because its my relax method, after i eat, i relax, after sex, i relax, on breaks at work, i relax, etc. I have recently started taking Wellbutrin, hopefully that'll work, its a depression med, but my doc said it can also help to wean people off of nicotine. I'll see.
