I am wondering the difference. My friend is having her membranes stripped on Thursday and I am wondering how much longer she will have after that is done.

Stripping the membranes means detaching them partially from the cervix but *not* actually breaking them.

Stripping the membranes is done to try and soften the cervix and therefore send the woman into labor. I had it on my due date and my son was still a month overdue! Hopefully, she'll go into labor very soon! Breaking the water usually speeds up labor and you need to get to the hospital immediately if that happens. It doesn't mean she'll have him/her vaginally though. I went through 26 hours of induced labor and finally had a c-section. My son was a VERY hefty 10 lbs 4 oz and was definitely not coming on his own! The bag of water helps to keep things (germs) out of the uterus that can harm the baby. If she takes a bath, has sex, or anything like that, she can cause the baby to get an infection. That's why you need to go to the hospital. Tell her good luck!

Stripping the membranes is just taking the sac away from the cervix and stuff, but it doesn't actually break your water. It helps to start up contractions.

Your membranes is what holds your water in, so by stripping it you are just thinning it out so that it will be easier for your water to break and your contractions to get stronger causing you to go into labor
