I want to store some gas in a 7 gallon container in the event the gas stations has a shortage of gas or loses power to the pumps due to a hurricane.

How long can I store the gas?

depends on conditons
1 keep out of sun
2 keep cool
3 put a pruduct called stabil in it then should be good for a year

Keep in cool place, Every once in a while you need to let the excess air out for a minute, other than that I dont think there is anything wrong with keeping gas for a long time. If you think about, lawn mowers store gas in their tanks for months months over cold months or just ones that plain dont work

Store it in a container designed to hold gas. It can eat through a lot of plastics. And put the lid on to slow evaporation. And try that Stabil the other guy was mentioning.

As long as it vaporizes! However, I advise you to bury the container under ground, to prevent any explosion danger.
