The word ***** stems from the Spanish word *****, meaning black. In English, ***** or neger became negar and finally ******, most likely under influence of French nègre. Neger (sometimes spelled "neggar") prevailed in northern New York under the Dutch and also in Philadelphia, in its Moravian and Pennsylvania Dutch communities. For example, the New York City African Burial Ground was originally known as "Begraaf Plaats van de Neger.

"****** is an extremely derogatory term used for black people. During the period when slavery was practiced worldwide, and in particular by the United States and European countries, and for several decades after Europe and North America prohibited slavery, it was a standard, casual English term for black people. The word traditionally has been associated with an often casual contempt, a racist assumption of black inherent inferiority, even of bestiality, making it extremely pejorative. In the last 100 years it has also become a friendly and jocular term, used self referentially, among some black people.

In the time of slavery in America. The N word was and is derogatory coming from a non black. It means you are sub human, not worthy of respect. It means unintelligent and ignorant. It means you are a beast of burden, not capable of a higher function. In those times of slavery. Some ppl using the N word, even felt that blacks didn't have souls, not much better than an animal that didn't deserve God or salvation. This is why it is so offensive. The N word meant that you were the scum of the earth, to be used, abused and discarded at will. The word itself probably came from slavers in Nigeria. NIger...ia

The word is a disrespectful term used to identify low income, miss treated slaves. But it has been ended over a hundred years ago or so. Now black people call there selves the same name but if anyone of a different race calls them that they are very defensive over such a small word. America, or any one living here today can't help what our ancesters did hundreds of years ago. We shouldn't even be fighting over this. It is dumb and very inmature. White people are suppose to be racist but you know we don't have holidays to celebrate our skin color and we get called racist for everything we do that black people do is okay. This is stupid we all should be able to do the same damn things. We are equal. That is all there is to it. Black and white skin is different because of pigmintation of the skin. you can't help the way you were born.

Most of the romance languages (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese...) have the word "*****" meaning "black" (in colour) derived from the Latin "niger". During the period in America's history when black workers were shipped to America to work as slaves, this word came to be adopted from the hispanic South American languages to describe a person of dark skin. Essentially, a "*****" person simply means a "black" person. Through constant repetition of the Spanish word in the American accent, it seems likely that the word was corrupted from "*****" to "niggero" to simply "******". The term "******" has taken on perjorative qualities as it implies not only darkness of skin, but a general lack of intelligence and sophistication. At the time of the word's origin, various English speaking North American settlers who set cultural standards considered black people fundamentally inferior and less civilized. The term is generally considered offensive to black people not only because it singles them out on the basis of their skin colour, but also, because of its origin, it carries connotations of slavery, inferiority and oppression

It was what they called blacks in the US during the time they where slave labor.

I can under stand why it would be considered offensive....

What I don't udnerstand is why many blacks think it's ok to call eachother that yet are still offined by it. If they are thinking of it as another word for slave or some one who is stupid and incivilized... why do they go around calling achother by it? o.O

Because a feature of skin colour was used to classify people to "upper" and "lower" in Europe and European colonies in order to make of them an out-cast and use them as slaves, to do not respect their needs equally, to exploit them in every way.

Too many social stereotypes were formed during these times, besides these racist clichees are passed through language too, and replicated using language as well. So it is one of ways to diminish racism towards people of black skin, though discriminated people may even do not feel all importance of it as they do not participate in anti-black racist discource and inter-generation transfer process of these stereotypes.
