All the movies are either the past experiences of future projections, every human being on the face of the earth is playing a part. Even the plays of Shakespeare are very close to life.

Many of shakespeare's contemporaries were every bit as compelling as Shakespeare and in many instances better. I would guess that more people would know Marlowe, Ben Johnson, Ford, and Webster to name a few.
However, in terms of tragedy I would guess we'd see more Seneca since he was the most direct influence for things like Titus.

Shakespeare's sources, probably....as messed with by someone else. These would include the Bible, Plutarch's Lives, Commedia, etc.
But really, there aren't that many different stories -- what's the classic taxonomy? Man against self, man against nature, man against man..?
