Since the use of corporal punishment has all but been eliminated the only recourses for schools to deal with unruliness are:
Detention.
Suspension.
Expulsion.
Exclusion from school-related events (sports, special events, etc).
Myself, I still believe a good whack on the seat is a good attention-getter.

Isolation from other students would be a good form of punishment, where the student still has to do their school work.

Suspension etc is only giving them what they want. No school.

Also bringing the parent into the solution, there could be something bad happening at home that is making the child act out in school.

Sometimes school is the only place some children even get attention, good or bad.

I think that all cases should be based on the individuals needs and not one standard punishment for everyone.

Usually bent over a table for three swats with a paddle. Just when you consider that the State doesnt permit it doesnt imply the college doesnt do it. The legislation additionally don't observe to personal faculties. I have heard of a few schools that do use corporal punishment. Not certain if thats real. Almost the entire states that permit paddling have the poorest experiment ratings and maximum drop out premiums within the nation. Studies have proven that a paddling can also be well for reminiscence. VeggieChick: Whats rather unhappy is that your moms and dads dont contact you.

Detention is one option, but if the kids aren't actually doing anything during that time, not even homework, it's time badly spent.

I've always suggested some sort of community work around the school, whether it be painting over graffitti, picking up litter on the grounds, weeding plant beds, etc.

This is part of a program at a university near me, where kids who get caught drinking underage etc., have to job shadow a janitor for a few days as part of their community service.

Corporal punishment within the public school system is not allowed here in Canada, hasn't been for years. Within our school board, a five-day suspension is usually the highest punishment ever given.

Nothing physically and emotionally punitive, fortunately. Sending the child to the disciplinarian for a verbal warning, or for detention (after school they have to sit in a class room quietly and work on homework.) Some teachers work with a point system--reinforcing good behavior with points, or taking points away when children do not stay on task.

Detention is the only alternative for non-violent acts and suspension for very violent acts.

i have felt that suspension gives the perpetrator what they want, freedom from school.

I would make them come to school, but they sit in the office all day. No education, but no free pass.

something a little bit more severe than detention would be to isolate them... kind of like the chambers they have in prison... except without the annoying guards
