When you sign up with the new provider, tell them you want to keep your old number. They'll take care of it.

The above was correct.
However, only a few companies actually have the ability to do that.
Whether it is a mobile carrier or standard carrier.
There is almost always an extra charge for that also.
More and more companies are trying to do that simply because of the NEED.....we are slowing running out of telephone numbers.
You must remember too, there might already be your number in use in that current area code.

it is called Local Number Portability it must be done within the same geograpical area, and in my experience it would be against the law to charge you for it as it is mandated by the FCC that you be able to do so, i have never heard of a company chargin all you need is the name of the person the phone is under the passcode to the acct and acct number then you will be good to go your provider will let you know when the port is complete
