As all the other answerers have said, "the Raj" refers to the British rule in India. But over the 350 (odd) years of British presence in the sub-continent, the concept of their role in India changed. Although it is hard to pin down, the Raj is generally considered to refer to the direct rule of India by the British (1859-1947) and the Anglo-Indian culture that developed from this. Before the "Great India Mutiny" of 1857, social attitudes and the nature of government (through the British East India Company, established in 1601,) were still in transition. It is with the declaration of direct rule 1859 and the declaration of "Empire of India," 1877 that the Raj takes its full (media) form. Here is a good site to give you the background to the Raj:

The raj was a british ruler in india placed in position by the british conquerors! ( i hop ei remember right.i have a history exam in 9 days)

"The Raj" is Hindi for "the Reign" .. probably not completly a literal translation.. but the British Raj .. refers to when the British rule Reigned India..
