I just inherited a 15 ft aluminum canoe with wooden paddles. The paddles are in pretty good shape, just need a little tlc. What little paint is left on the canoe is faded, and there is none at all left on the bottom. What is the best and cheapest way to repaint? I am sure I will need to sand and prime first, but no idea what the best products would be.

If it was previously painted, it will need to be repainted. The aluminum skin was probably not anodized which would have been sufficient corrosion resistance. You're right to remove all old paint and sand any corrosion areas. Clean the surface afterward. The primer should contain a "chromate"--Zinc chromate or Magnesium chromate, etc. After the primer is allowed to cure sufficiently, proceed with painting. You can easily get information on paint recommendations on the net--Tnemec, Sherwin-Williams, etc.

If the aluminum is galvanized, you may not need to repaint. It may have just had a decorative paint job. However, my advice would be to take a photo of the canoe and bring it down to a shop that can tell you what to do. REI has a good "paddle" section.

overtheline is correct on your Primer. Aluminum is funny and most paint will not adhere well without a proper primer. What overtheline mentions may seem a little expensive, but, for the years of service it can provide it well worth the money. I use this on my Outboard Engine with very good results.
