I do agree with you on this point. However, this is not grounds to give women special rights. For instance: I have seen records of court cases in which the father is a decent man but the mother is on drugs and all the problems that come with it. The father gets a divorce because the mother neglects the kids and she still gets custody on the grounds that "Children need their mother."

I agree with you, but equal rights does not mean special rights.

Yes, but things had to happen just as they did. During the 1800's here in the states. PPL were focused on the civil war and moving west.. Then in 1917, world war I. We made some headway with the Flappers of the 1920's, but was soon forgotten because of the depression and WWII. In the 30's and 40's, this country could only deal with it's survival. In the 50's and early 60's, our nation was focused on segregation and civil rights. Shows like Leave it to Beaver and Father knows best, didn't help. It wasn't until the outcry over Vietnam and the hippie movement, that made the nation stand up and notice a whole new consciousness and women. The media helped tremendously, with the televised talk shows and news footage of sit ins and bra burnings. Mass media had to happen first to get the plight of the woman out there. Women like Gloria Steinem rallied and refused to take NO for an answer finally paved the way. We still have a way to go...but it's better now than it has ever been in the history of this country. In the early days, it was a survival mechanism to protect women and keep them in a subordinate position. It earned them special favors in times of upheaval...women and children first! But now that we have an evolved civilization. Women no longer need or want to be protected or be subordinate. However, it takes time to change the attitude of centuries past. It's an ongoing struggle.

Why it took them so much time, when Islam gave them Equal Rights since more that 1400 years.
That is the quality we should be concerned about.
If women are looking to be "equal" with men, no way, they were built in that way.
I see the great achievement in women lib, was for men, the men directed the movement to get the women naked more and more and turned them into pleasure toys, toys to see on the street and toys to play with.
You should have proper definition of what women do really need, more equal rights, or more nakedness.....they are totally different issues.

It is still a big issue as far as i'm concerned and realistically as long as men are considered the stronger gender i don't think we'll ever be equal. History shows men to be the ones to earn the money and keep their family whilst women are the ones who raise the children. This idea has now spread to most areas of society. Women weren't allowed in the army as the men would be too concerned with protecting them and not looking after themselves. This has thankfully now changed but i think a lot of men would still like this idea of women needing to be protected to be the way we live our lives.

Certainly, equality of rights for both sexes is a necessity if society is to progress and we are all to live in harmony. The equality that has been achieved is fragile and still not complete. Women in the UK still get paid less than men for the same jobs, for example. Men and women should fight for equality and reject prejudice, stereotypes and oppression.

Yes, I agree. The Women's Lib movement should never have been necessary. Women are of equal worth & value as men. I used to live in Rochester, NY....where Susan B. Anthony lived. I've been to her grave site. She has done much to further the causes of women.

i have to disagree, for starters men can pee standing up,women cant.women can have babies men cant. men have a natural instinct to protect women, women have a natural instinct to protect everyone.. women think about things more emotionally, men think about things more in a common sense way..this is only my opionion, lets take war for instance..lets say a man and a women were on the front lines fighting..do you think he might be sidetracked, because he was trying to protect the woman, only because its a natural instinct..what if they were in a relationship while they were on military duty......and they got into a lovers spat,do you think they wiuld be a little distracted? dont get me wrong, there are a lot of ways women and men are equal, but there are some differences, its just natural law...

Not as much time as it took for people of different colors to actually be considered human beings.

Besides, and even now there is no true equality.

I don't think we will ever see true equality. And you're only referring to the west, I take it? The way some women are forced to live in some countries...

In many places and circumstances women are still not considered as equal to men... and I am not just referring to non-western cultures, I am also definitely referring to the western culture!
