You can. I've put them on the back before. It's just tradition. They are franked by a machine.

In the early postal days, it was designated top right corner so the postal worker would have a uniformed place to look for proper postage, when flipping through the mail. Today the postal machines are designed to scan that same corner during mail processing.

For the franking machine, if they won't fit there for some reason it is requested that you stick them on the bottom left - then they go through the franking machine upside down.

The postal service has to establish this regulation, because if it didn't exist, people would put the postage anywhere, and this would wreck havoc on the efficiency of the automated mail sorting machines, because they are designed to recognize certain formatting on addressed mail.

Style, I guess. I've seen people put them on other corners before, and the mail still excepts it.
