I remember reading a definitive list of the world's most recognizable faces, this was a few years ago now and would probably have been on the BBC News website.
The face of Jesus is the most recognizable in the world but only the traditional image of a man with long hair, long beard, white skin etc. Nobody knows for certain what Christ looked like but he wouldn't have had white skin and probably didn't have long hair. The best representations of what Christ looked like bear little resemblence to the traditional image we have. In other words, if an accurate picture of Christ were shown to people they wouldn't recognise him.
Excluding Christ the most recognisable face at the time (about 1998) was Diana, Princess of Wales; closely followed by other members of the British Royal Family including the Queen and the Queen Mother.
Micheal Jackson was the most recognizable celebrity and would have ranked about 4th overall. Bill Clinton (then US president) ranked high in the list as did the Dali Lama, Neslon Mandella, Ghandi.and John Lennon.
Sorry I can't place them in order but all the people mentioned ranked amongst the most recognisable faces in the world.
Since then I guess it would be safe to say that George W Bush and Osama Bin Laden have joined the list.
I can tell you that at his peak, Mohammed Ali (Casius Clay) was the world's most recognisable face and probably still ranks highly to this day.

It used to be Princess Diana. But now I would think it would probably be Osama bin Laden. But it's hard to make assumptions about who people in vast countries like Russia, Korea and China recognise and they make up a lot of the worlds population.
The Queen is very recognisable as her image is still used in countries that were part of the Empire.
Didn't Michael Moore or someone do a survey amongst children and found that Ronald McDonald was more recognisable than Jesus?

I think Beckham and Ronaldo are the most famous/ most recognised persons in the world. This is because over 80% of the whole world are football fans, which is about more than 480000000000 people.

Couldn't be Beckham or Ronaldo, because most of the U.S. or Canada don't know who they are, despite the rest of the world's love of soccer. Crazy, but true. I couldn't describe Beckham if I tried. North America is a big part of the world.
