When you figure this one out let me know. It must be very difficult for boys to become men.

I think that menstruation just signals a woman's ability to bear young. You know, sexual maturity. With women, it can be quite a while later before breast development is complete so I wouldn't say that the period is the end, it is only the beginning. For men I imagine that happens when they begin to ejaculate, they experience voice changes and their bodies begin to grow hair in the special places.

Besides that, it could be many years later that a person reaches full maturity. I mean if you think about it, these changes occur in the adolescent stage of development. While a person's body may appear adult-like, the mental level of maturity often remains child-like. For a multitude of people, it may never change...

Girls become "sexually mature" (meaning she can have a kid) when they get their first period. Mothers feed them the "now you are a woman" line of crap in the same sense she tells you when you are 6 and you fall down and cut yourself "it bleeds because its getting better". Periods just mean females are sexually mature, that's all man. You "become a man" (sexually mature, meaning you can make a kid through a girl by sex, you putting "it" in her and NOT pulling it out when it starts to feel REALLY good) when you are about 10 or 11. Girls about the same time, many later like 13 or even 14. There ya go bud, no more confusion.

A girl does not become a woman just because she has a period.
A boy becomes a man when he proves to be a caring responsible adult.

girls don't become women when they get their period. girls just reached puberty when they get their period. i think becoming a man/woman is all in your head. i think you become those things when you gain life experience and maturity. i don't think turning 18 makes you an adult either, i think it just makes you a LEGAL adult.
