Obviously, by the aggregate numbers (the only valid standard), the United States. Until 1850, it was China. England for a few years after that because of the Industrial Revolution. But, by the end of the 19th century, the U.S. had a greater GNP than England, China, Japan, France, Germany, Spain and Italy combined. By 1929, it was all of that and 17 other countries to boot.

I would agree with the statement of another poster. It depends on how you are measuring wealth. In per captita income, GDP, national reserves, etc. Without a specific guage your question is impossible to answer.
In terms of sheer magnitude of economy I don't think anyone would argue that it is the US. However, China is now running a not-so-distant second!!!

For GDP it's the US but a lot of that's owned by Gates, The Wal-Mart family, Warren Buffet etc.
