Skype uses VoIP (Voice over IP) technology, so it give a better voice quality than the normal messengers (MSN, Yahoo) it's supposed to be even better that the normal phones. In addition to that you can make a call to a normal phone (although MSN messenger has started providing this service recently). so at the end, in Skype, you are using normal phone, with the usual ringing and so on, while in MSN messenger you have to be logged in to receive any call or message.

sype offers more stable voice calls and are much clear. It can also call land lines and vice versa and its of better quality. Yahoo and MSN need to mature in this market ie no advets in messenger or MSN.

Skype offers termination services to PSTN. MSN, yahoo provide PC to PC communication i.e. your call does not hop-off to the PSTN operated by your local national carrier.

In plain words, you cannot use MSN to ring your friend's PSTN phone.
