By the sounds of it your son did a system restore. This is a useful feature should you install some bad hardware/software that causes incompatability issues with your computer. Unfortunately it can also restore viruses and other problems. Getting help from an engineer is a good idea, also you can trying doing XP recovery using your XP disk.
