no catch one and put it in a jar...it will last a few days....havnt u ever done that for a science class? but i think its somthing about the wings if u touch them or somthing

It depends on the species.
Monarchs do their great migration, and if I understand it correctly they return the next spring...
Nonmigratory moths/butterflies usually have days/weeks, enough time to breed, lay eggs
