Cut down on his hay slightly for the week before, because horses can hold up to 150 pounds of food in their intestines at a time, which is a lot of extra weight to carry around. An hour or so before the race, give your horse a few carrots or some grain for an extra boost of energy from the carbohydrates. They won't colic or founder from a few carrots or an extra quarter scoop of grain.

I give my horse carrots every time I have a show (I barrel race), which gives her the extra boost she needs to stay at her peak throughout the show. Shows I attend can last for up to 18 hours, so the horses need extra to keep their energy up.

Either stay with the same ration or slightly reduce their feed ration starting a few days before the race.

Feed your horse whatever he/ she is fed on a normal basis. If you don't, he could end up colicing at the race.
