Chameleons change colours because they have pigment cells under their first few layers of skin. These nifty little things are called chromatophores and have several layers that help them to achieve such interesting shades. The top layer has yellow and / or red pigment and the others have varying amounts of white and / or blue. When the cells expand or contract they the pigments in the chromatophores mix and the chameleon changes colour.

There's the how, for the reasons why they do there's a lot:

1) Temperature changes - "I'm hot" or "It's too cold" and sometimes "It's just right" think of it as a chameleon's non-verbal way of letting you know how it feels about the weather. It also helps them to keep from getting hotter, or colder. Darker colours to absorb more heat and lighter to serve as a no rub sunscreen.

2) Light.

3) Sex appeal - females love it when a male flashes his colours at her.
