OK here's the go. fishes have this (the others called it a slime layer) mucous layer produced by the fish that helps protect it from its environment. if some fish (like discus) the fry (baby fishes) can actually eat small amounts of it as food, when they're really young.
Stressed fish (like when you move them from tank to tank etc.) don't produce as much mucous as they normally should, and that's why they sometimes get sick. also, some parasites can attack a fish with little or no mucous layer. The general rule is don't handle or touch a fish any more than is necessary

If you put the slime on the stab wound from the torny fin of a catfish, it will aid in healing. A guy said he got stabbed in the hand and he worked the slime into the wound and it was painless the next day. Imagine that! True story, try it sometime!

they hav slimy scales all over them ,this helps them to avoid friction wid water so tht they can swim or glide smoothly enough to gain their desired speed in water
