A local tire store is selling nitrogen to inflate car tires. They advertise it as increasing gas mileage. This sounds like pure, unadulterated BS to me.

The only advantage nitrogen has over air is that it keeps a more consistent pressure under hard use (this is why race cars use it). So unless you're driving a couple hundred miles a day, there is absolutely no advantage to it. As far as increasing fuel mileage, I see scam written all over it. Just keep your tires properly inflated with air (check the pressure once a month) and you should be golden. HTH!!

Nitrogen is used sometimes to inflate tires because it doesn't expand when heated as much as regular air. For a car used on the street, there is virtually no advantage that you will feel. It is occasionally used for racing purposes

It's lighter than air. it can improve gas mileage...but u'd barely notice. It improves mileage because it makes ur car lighter..but how much lighter?? well, it would be like removing 1 kid from the car..that much lighter. The downside to that tire is..if it somehow catches afire...ur tires blow up..nitrogen is deadly when exposed to fire. I wouldn't do it, not worth it. Stick with air =)
