Government that is elected by the people and can be removed by the people.

We allow duly elected politicians an unfettered right to represent us during the tenure of a parliament.

Too much, so called democracy, however, can create anarchy.
The BBC and other television media constantly invite viewers opinions on a whole range of issues. The problem is that they have their own agenda and will not tolerate opinions that do not conform to it. They seem to be setting themselves up as an alternative government, requiring democratically elected politicians to attend their studios to be held to account.

So, in my view, democracy does not include constantly referring back to the public for its opinions on every issue, particularly when Mr. and Mrs. Smith are not qualified to answer the questions. All you end up with is a committee comprising of every barrack room lawyer in the land. Reminds me of the UN.

A system of government that is established by the governed. To be truly democratic the government would require unanimous decisions by all of the governed on all of the laws it establishes. Otherwise, an individual may be forced to act against his will. Usually, though, democracies are viewed where a majority can act and that is acceptable. But, under that condition, a society can result in tyranny of a minority by a majority. A republic sets standards (basic rights) that even the majority cannot transgress. Unfortunately, even that isn't good enough at times as proved by the United States inclusion of slavery in our Constitution.

Democracy is a controlled freedom by the powerful. The world is ruled by the powerful and the wealthy but because they belong the minority, they have to give the people (the majority) some say for fear they may be overturned.
There is no absolute democracy in the world.

Don't take my word for it, consider Americas founders concept..."A pure democracy can admit no cure for the mischiefs of faction. A
common passion or interest will be felt by a majority, and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party.
Hence it is, that democracies have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their
deaths." -- James Madison.
Failed every time it has been tried. If the Anti-America/Republic crowd get their way, America is doomed!

DEMOCRACY - People making choices for their country and NOT BIG BROTHER !!!
We are living in a controlled Country and most are too damned blind to see it. Around every corner there are regulations on everything ,no more freedom of speech ECT... before you realize you will be told when, where and how to ****.

I am glad to be the age I am, I would not want to be around in 40 years to be in the HELL that this government has established for it's people. DEMOCRACY ? no such word in America anymore.

democracy in its real sense is goverment of the people for the and by the people, but this hardly what is been practised in the so called democratised nations of today. its freedom to exercise your fundamental human rights as defined by the UN, there's hardly any freedom because in the end the government of the day is by a selected few who fortunately for them were able to rigg the elections ...etc

Go to India- you are free to spit anywhere, smoke and booze (though there is a law), drive anywhere, drive anything without valid license, scratch your name on public utilities, use megaphones at no sound zone, block the road for marriages, religious and political show-offs, abuse in public, get insulted and beaten up for nothing by police, waiting in long queues at local transport where mediators have direct entry inside the counter, cows, dogs and pigs are moving on roads alongwith.
Nothing bad in the country, it is the democracy without proper restrictions which has spoiled the countrymen.

Representative Democracy = Government of the people by representatives of the people. who may or may not be acting in the interests of those they purport to represent.

For mass democracy in action, you need to look at the people's soviets in 1917, the Paris Commune in 1871 etc.
