Chronic period pains are caused by the contraction of the uterus in its attempts to rid it of all the blood and uterine linings. It helps to use something that will relax your smooth muscle tissue like buscopan although it is known to increase the blood flow.

You don't say how old you are. I tried EVERYTHING and was in agony every month until I went on the pill, which I only did to cure the period pain! I realise that's not for everyone but it did the trick for me instantly.

The good news is that if you choose to have a family you don't suffer at all afterwards ... well, not with period pain anyway ha ha x

When you have period pain it can be caused by passing blood clots but can be made worse by getting stressed or tensing up because of the pain. I found that a cup of tea and a sit down with a hot water bottle over my stomach tended to help. A good book to take your mind off things can work wonders if you enjoy reading. If not do something sedate like watching TV, needlework or art. Ibuprophen can be good if you are really suffering. When you feel a bit better, take a short walk and stretch off. Having sex with someone you feel very comfortable with can also ease the pain if you are feeling up to it.

My doctor advised me to stay active and exercise before I start my period and to stay away from caffeine because it can make symptoms worse. When I do get excruciating cramps (and I get them often), if I can't stay home I put one of those heat patches on and take ibuprofen. When I'm at home I like to either soak in a really warm bath or lay on my stomach on a heating pad. I'd ask your doctor about how much pain reliever you should take (I take 800mg ibuprofen (4 200mg over-the-counter tablets) every 6-8 hours). They might be able to prescribe something stronger for you.

Not chronic which obviously means long term, but when I get it I take feminax which has codine in it, it's the only thing that's worked for me, but mine only ever last a day or 2.

If you are getting chronic stomach cramps you need to go to the Docs.

heat packs, stretching (ask at your local yoga centre), anti-inflammatory medications (BUT, please see your doctor first!!)

and if you're into alternative medicine, Reiki is excellent :) I used to have the most severe period pain until 10 years ago when I got attuned to Reiki and I have not had period pain since. It's true.

Feminax is good as is exercise, failing that i have to say orgasms are quite good. Getting up the enthusiasm to give yourself one is a problem when you're in pain but it really is good if you can manage it.

A hot water bottle is always a comfort to me. Plus, try rubbing your stomach gently in a circular motion (clockwise). My sympathies!
