Irony is the situation when you were expecting something to be happened and it happened completely in the opposite way or you can say totally unexpected.

DO NOT take the advice of the dim bulb above and listen to Alanis. Virtually nothing in that song is remotely ironic. There is nothing ironic about a no smoking sign on your cigarette break, nor about a lift when you're already there. GOD
