I really am with you on this one - I slept like a baby - you mean you woke up screaming every 4 hours?

It originates from the innocence of babes - I slept like an innocent = I slept like a baby.

Babies fall asleep in the darned-est positions sometimes, and never complain about back aches or hangovers or bad dreams or other stuff that adults seem to take such pleasure in. To all outward appearances, they sleep swiftly, obliviously, and wake happy ... similar to "sleep like a log" or "sleep like a deadman".
All part of the weird world of the English Idiom.

well yes they do wake up every 2 hours and want to suck on something but if you also see that during the day it also sleeps most of the day. so it seems a baby is always sleeping.

cause when a baby sleeps, it looks so peace full and by saying you slept like a baby means u had a nice relaxing, peacefull sleep. Other than that i don't know.

It's true that babies wake up frequently but whatever sleep they take...that's just perfect. They don't fall asleep taking with them any woes, preoccupations, tensions, worries. That's why they sleep happily and soundly. Haven't you seen babies smiling in sleep. Ever seen an elderly person blessed with such a sleep.

When babies sleep, they are one of the most peaceful, relaxing things to watch. One might assume that they have the best sleep a person could have. Hence the phrase.

Or 'slept like a log' when logs are actually dead.

Or 'working like a dog'. A bit outdated. Most dogs wouldn't do a decent days work in their lives. Lazy beggars...

Or 'drink like a fish'. Putting aside the fact they don't drink, if you did drink like a fish, you'd look really really stupid.

Or 'sweet as a nut'. To what nut exactly would that person be referring to?

Or 'sweat like a pig'. Pigs don't even have sweat glands!

Oh dear, you've got me started now...

that's b'coz a baby tends to fall asleep easily and the baby will not be bothered by the surrounding actions (unless it's a sudden loud noise)....baby will fall asleep anywhere, anytime, any positions as long as they are tired.... but of course they will wake up every 2 hours or so to feed as they need food often....

Because babies are truly innocent. People equate restless sleep with stress or a guilty conscience. Babies have neither.

It is a good point... it's just to the NON-PARENT... the STEREOTYPE is that a BABY always sleeps. Of course, that stereotype was created by people visiting the day after a parent's sleepless night!
