like does that meanit has like its own mini computer? and like u can download music straigt from the internet instead of going through i-tunes???me and my sis don't get it?

The hard drive is simply the device on which the songs are stored. As the I-pod does not have the ability to run the I-tune (or any other) computer program, it can not connect to the Interner or download songs. It needs an external computer to do that. It just uses a minature hard drive to store the songs. But it takes a computer to move the songs on and off the drive.

it mean that you can use the ipod like a external hard drive, instead of just disk C, you will have another unit like that one to store information, but if you put music on it without using itunes it probably won't work

It works like a mini hard drive. You can strore files in it just like an ordinary hard drive. You can save not just music files in it.
