I don't have much experience, but want to get to grips with the basics (I'm more than a little nervous/excited by a new job, but want to do a bit of background reading before I start). Could anybody point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Hi, a book would be a hassle for you to learn quickly.

What I recommend you to do is trial and error and looking at tutorials online. A quick tutorial would be this: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/tutorial.html

Learn it and do some small console programming, it will teach you. It is relatively simple.. Or you could read some quick lectures about it: http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~kiringa/courses05/csi3317/lectures.html
The important ones for you is lecture 5 -> 7. Goto that authors website to know more.

I would guess it would take you around 3 days to be comfortable. IF you need help, you can visit my univeristies forum at http://ww.campusinteractive.com/forum/ to ask your database questions.
