Hamlet and Taming of the Shrew both employ the concept of a play within the larger frame work of the play. There is a name for that literary device. Does someone happen to know what it is?

I think "play within a play" IS the name of the literary device.

Are you thinking of mise en abyme?

I'm not sure, but I know that a story within a story is called a Frame story. Maybe they're related?
