My wife delivered a boy on jan 2003. She could not lactate . We faced many complications for the child as he did not have breast milk to drink. Is there anything i can do now to make her lactate within next one month? I have to prove her that she can lactate .only then, both me and my wife can think of going for the second child.Hence this question please.

I hope you had formula to feed your child. Perhaps your wife had a medical condition which prevented her from sharing milk.

If she couldn't lactate after giving birth, I am wondering why you think she would lactate now..a few years after giving birth.

To my knowledge, no. But then again, I'm a dentist, not a ob/gyn.

Lactation is stimulated by sucking, which stimulates the release of hormones called "prolactin" from the anterior pituitary and "oxytocin" from the posterior pituitary. The former stimulates actual milk production by the milk-producing lands and the latter is a smooth-muscle constrictor that helps the milk be pushed toward the nipple. This entire process cannot occur, however, unless the breast tissue has been properly developed for milk production, a task which is accomplished (if memory serves) by estrogen and progesterone.

It would be a miracle if women could just nurse babies at any given moment.....even cows have to be bred and produce a calf to be a "dairy" cow. Some women have problems nursing and hospitals ususally employ a lactation specialist for this purpose. However, you will not know until the baby is born whether you will be sucessful. Nature sometimes precludes one's wishes......
