To use their baby to ask for considerate treatment when driving. Tailgaters piss eveyone off but if you have a baby then..........you need to be exempt??? theyre a bit OTT and I think ppl do like announcing that they have successfully reproduced.
Still, If I was carelessly driving and then saw a car with that sign I'd be careful not to get too close up behind or whatever, but for whose benefit? Probably the drivers!!
The only possible benenfit they could provide for a baby is a reduction in car horn noises on about 2 occasions each year. Not very useful, however useful they may seem in theory.
In fact theyre pretty pointless, and may make some bitter and angry drivers behave worse on the road when theyre around you!

There is no purpose other than parents telling other motorists that they have a baby in their car, and quite frankly, who cares??? It doesn't change my driving style, and if they feel that their little ones are in grave danger in the back of the car, that they have to put up warnings, then I suggest they either walk or use public transport.
Usually the signs are so small you have to tailgate just to read the bloody things, so kind of negates the safety argument....

because you don't realize it but the kids driving crazy around will actually have a lil respect for you. I know this one cause I use to be one of those kids. People are less rude to you. You don't get as many finger's. Hey maybe every one should get one. Really people do behave better knowing there's a baby in the car. You know those annoying people who won't let u over in there lane try the baby sign they'll let you over then.

They were meant to alert emergency services that there was a child in the car in the event of an accident or other roadside emergency. The proper use was to have placed them on the window closest to the child and remove them when the child(ren) were not in the vehicle.
I can't tell you how many times we were on an accident scene looking for a child that may have been ejected just to find out the kid wasn't in the car to start with!

Hopefully greater safety for the children. Our hope is that you will be a little more careful knowing there is a baby on board. They do not work as much as we would like.

It is to let the emergency services know you may have a baby in the car if you have an accident.

They do nothing. People don't drive extra carefully around those cars with signs anyway. It's like Bill Engel would say......"I have a baby, here's my sign"

The purpose may be that any passing vehicle doesn't honk recklessly...not to irritate the baby. if the baby is not infant then he may poke out a hand or his head. So it also cautions others for not overtaking from close distance. ....

Same as a mother pushing a buggy in a shopping mall. They barrel right through everyone, running over feet, into shins, and expecting everyone to jump out of their way. It's a license to maim.
Or else it could be an invitation to kidnappers.
