It implies that you are either lazy or stupid, especially since there is a Check Spelling box just above you

It's disrespectful. It means that they cannot take the trouble to spell words correctly. However, there are differences. Anyone can make a mistake but some people just couldn't care.
Getting "irked" is justified when the meaning of the material is unclear owing to bad spelling. This varies between culture groups but Yahoo answers is for a general audience.

Not many people agree with us on this issue. They always say to use spell check. The problem is that spell only works in the question line. That problem is that the spell check does not come up with the correct spelling of that word.
The explanation paragraph does not have spell check at all. The questioner has no way of spell check. I am not perfect, nor are those who think they are so high and mighty that they feel they know it all and judge all. Thank God that we are not like that. Right?

When words are misspelled, it can change the entire meaning of the question or sentence. For example, I saw a beer eating garbage. Entirely different than a bear eating garbage. Not spelling properly also gives the reader the impression that the asker hasn't got much education or may be too lazy to look up the proper spelling.

Depends on what you mean by "spell wrong". It does irk me when the same people incorrectly spell the same word over and over and over or when they mispronounce the same word over and over and over. My husband and his family all say "supposably" for "supposedly", which is not a word. Yes, one can infer what they mean but your ear still catches that mispornunciation and when heard repeated over many years, you just come to belive that they are plain stupid. Words written incorrectly are a horse of a different color. Anyone can produce a typeo and everyone does, even Mavis Beacon (renound typist) and anyone who harps on a little typeo is trying to divert attention either towards that person who made it, perhaps portraying them as stupid, or is trying to deflect attention away from another topic they do not want to discuss. In that case, either way, its sad and petty. Persistent, incorrect spelling of common words is very annoying. Usage of common "confusing" words such as "they're and their", "effect and affect", "discreet and discrete" and "write and right", etc. That means you just didn't pay attention the first 6 yrs of grade school and now you have to rely on your husband/wife/bf/gf to proof read every little scrap of thing you write just so that when you turn in something to the boss or to a professor you don't look like a jackass. And BELIEVE ME, after awhile, we DO mind proof reading and correcting the same, sad, 4th grade mistakes over and over and over and over again because by now, screw it, you have someone to fix your mistakes so why learn what is really hard to learn now what your maleable child mind could have easily learned 20 yrs ago. And that, is why it "irks" some people when others spell wrong.

I find it annoying when someone is ranting on about something and they spell words wrong. It just means for me that I don't take them seriously. If they can't spell, how can they make a valid point, especially when a spell check is available.

Because it interrupts the flow of what I'm reading, making me suddenly have to decode the sentence. If it happens many times, I grow increasingly annoyed. It's like listening to someone singing your favorite song off-key or off-tempo.

Something that should be clear is now not clear, and it's annoying. I can forgive people that misspell occasional words, but if they're horrible, it makes it so I don't even want to continue looking at it...and it's a million time worse when they're doing it on purpose, using 733tspeak or IRC chat or text-message shortcut.

On top of that, it IS disrespectful, if done on purpose or because they're lazy. Why are you wasting my time with your brain-drivel? Most times if I see that crap in the question, I won't even click to look at it.

It's completely different if they're not native-English speakers. To them I applaud them doing as good as they do.

If you were an employer, would you hire somebody whose C.V was littered with stupid spelling mistakes?

It annoys me when somebody can remember all of the actors' names on their favourite soap opera but can't remember how to spell. I think it's a display of ignorance. That said, people do make genuine mistakes sometimes.

It annoys me when for example you see a shop sign saying tomato's when its tomatoes. That just makes them look really thick though.
It also annoys me when people are so pedantic that they point out every typo to you too. All the crap I type on the internet is hardly important so I cant be bothered to check it before clicking submit.

Oh but didn't you know.... its an inconvenience for them to spend two extra seconds deciphering what you said .... I try my best to spell correctly and to use proper grammar but getting the point across is all that truly matters to me whenever I write something .

Maybe because it's hard to tell what they mean to say, or maybe because they look stupid. Me, I've seen a lot of spelling errors, so and I'm used to it now; it's still annoying though.
