I have had fabulous experiences, made great friends and visited extraordinary places, while living just like a local.

We did a home exchange holiday and it was fantastic. It was so good we repeated it several times. It was really great to meet members of our exchange family's family, and their friends, and we arranged for our family to take them on a few special outings too.
One advantage to home exchange holidays is, of course, that they are much less expensive, but the REAL advantage, as far as we are concerned, is that you actually get to experience the culture of the country you are visiting. When we go somewhere and stay in a hotel and eat all our meals in a restaurant, it isn't that much different from being at home. Even when we visited China, there were always European meals on the menu. When we visited Malaysia, as volunteers for an international event, we were fortunate enough to get out of our 'European style' housing when we were invited to spend a weekend with friends we had met at the event. It was wonderful! And totally different from the 'Malaysian' experience of living in a four star hotel!

Yes, I think it would be fun. However, I don't know how it can be reliably arranged.
