Yes, Communication Satellites were inspired by a story by Arthur C Clarke. Robotics, as we will get to know the subject, were refined by Isaac Asimov. Also look at the sources for, the ION drive and Space Stations, and spend a lot of time rereading 2001 a Space Odyssey
