I was talking to a mechanic the other day and he said not to use air pumps at gas stations. He said the air that they pump weakens your tires. Is this true? And if so, what kind of air is suppose to go into them?

Sorry... I hate details, but let me clarify that he was not trying to sell me anything. I was not having any work done on my car.

Nitrogen, what is sometimes referred to as Dry Air, is an inert gas that can be used to fill car tires. It has been used in Air craft tires for decades. Nitrogen has no water, which makes it less susceptible to temperature and pressure changes. The water in normal air has been linked to wheel corrosion. It also causes large air pressure changes over relatively small temperature changes.

Not sure where your mechanic got this idea, but pretty much any air you use will be compressed type. It may have oil in it from the air system....but that won't hurt your tires, I think there would have been more of a public issue if this air system did affect the tire composition....

Compressed air. By the way, I don't think your mechanic friend is a very good mechanic, because no matter what, AIR is AIR.

Some mechanics use Nitrogen in their tires to make them last longer, but it costs money to do that about $ 5 a tire (or more) He's probably trying to get you to buy it.

Normal air goes into tires--the stuff you breathe every day. Nothing else. Your mechanic is full of 'hot air'.

Br549 has been sucking the helium out of his birthday balloons. Any twit knows that if you choose helium you will be the local Chittychittybangbang. Going to the store will require that you file a flight plan with the FAA.

Normal compressed air or if you want your tyres to run a little cooler and supposedly last longer you can put Nitrogen in them.

You can put nitrogen in your tires, your Mech was probably referring to moisture that gets trapped in compressed air and stays in your tires..not good.....
