Groan. This is another question where I'm amazed by some of the answers... specifically all the ones telling you to simply pour four gallons into a container you've said can only hold three.

In order to fill up the five gallon container with four gallons, you need to do the following:

1) Fill up the five gallon container with water.

2) Pour enough out of the five gallon container to fill up the three gallon container. That will leave you with exactly two gallons of water in the five gallon container.

3) Empty the three gallon container, and then pour the remaining water from the five gallon container into the three gallon container. You will then have exactly one gallon's worth of empty space in the three gallon container.

4) Fill up the five gallon jug again, and then pour off enough water to fill up the three gallon container completely. Since there was one gallon of empty space left in the three gallon container, once it is full, you will have exactly four gallons left in the five gallon container.

Conversely, you may also do it as follows:

1) Fill up the three gallon container, and pour it into the five gallon container. You will have two gallons of empty space left in the five gallon container.

2) Fill up the three gallon container again, and pour the water in it into the five gallon container until the five gallon container is full. Because there was only two gallons of empty space remaining in the five gallon container, you will be left with one gallon of water in the three gallon container.

3) Empty the five gallon container, and pour the remaining one gallon into the five gallon container.

4) Refill the three gallon container, and pour its contents into the five gallon container. Together with the one gallon you poured in previously, you will end up with exactly four gallons of water, once again, in the five gallon container.

=)

As i guess none of the containers are marked...so what you 'll do is you take the 5 gallons container and fill it, then pour it into the 3 gallons container. you'll have 2 gallons left in the 5 g container. You throw those 2 then you put the 3 gallons back into the 5 gallons container. Fill again the 3 gallons container and add it to the 5 gallons container. you'll have a 5 gallons container full and only 1 gallon left in the 3 gallons jar. Again you empty the 5 g container, pour in it the 1 g left, fill up the 3 g again the add it to the 1g...there you will have your 4 gallons...nice riddle but what a waste of content

Firstly fill the 5 gallons container full and then empty the container in another 3 gallons container exactly and then the amount left in first container will be 2 gallons.
Then remove the fluid from 3 gallons container means empty it then pour the remaining 2 gollons left in the first container in the second one.
Now the first container is empty and the second one contains 2 gallons.
Now here is the trick , then again fill the first container and the empty it in the second one ...............but as second one already has 2 gallons so it can take only 1 gallon and therefore the first container holds 4 gallons.

Fill the 3 gallon container and empty it in the 5 gallon container. Repeat, but of coarse only two gallons will fit as the 5 gallon will now be filled. Dump out the 5 gallon container and pour the remaining water from the 3 gallon container (1 gallon) in to it. Now fill the 3 gallon container and add it to the 5 gallon container for a total of 4 gallons!

Put the three gallon container into the 5 gallon container, and pour the water into the space between them until it reaches the top. Then pour that water into the three gallon and repeat the process, after pour the 2 gallons from the 3 gallon container into the 5 gallon container and you will have 4 gallons!

First, you fill up the 5 gallon container. Pour as much as will fit into the 3 gallon container. Empty the 3 gallon container. Pour the remaining 2 gallons into the 3 gallon container, but DON'T empty it. Refill the 5 gallon container. Fill the 3 gallon container to the brim with it, which will leave you with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container.

pour water in 5 gallons one. From that pour into 3 gallons one. U have 2 gallons in 5 gallons one. Empty the 3 gallons container and pour the 2 gallons into it. Now fill up the 5 gallons container again, and use it to fill up the 3 gallons container [which already has 2 gallons]. So only one gallon goes in..

Hence ur left with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container :)

From a full 5, pour into the 3, leaving 2 in the 5 container. Empty the 3, transfer the 2 from the 5 into the 3. Fill the 5, pour into the 3 container until full, leaving 4 in the 5 container. QED.

Fill up 5 gallon container...
Dump water from the 5 gallon container into the 3 gallon container.... then dump this water out.
You have 2 gallons of water now in the 5 gallon container.
Take this water and put it into the 3 gallon container.
Fill up the 5 gallon container... then dump 1 gallon of water into the 3 gallon container (there was 2 in it allready) leaving you with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container.

You fill up the 3 gallon container full of water then pour all of it into the 5 gallon container, then fill up the 3 gallon container 1/3 full and then pour it into the 5 gallon container to equal 4 gallons of water.

If all you need is 4 gallons, then use the 5 gallon container and put only 4 gallons in it.
