Branching out from the pharynx are the esophagus and the trachea. At the pharynx, food goes into the esophagus and air goes into the trachea. When one speaks, he/she is breathing. This causes the larynx to move down, opening the way for the trachea, so that air can pass through. With a mouth full of food, there is a possibility of the larynx moving down, and with it the food bolus. This produces a violent coughing to force the food out. In the event if the food is not forced out, the trachea is obstructed; denying entry to air. (Cannot breathe) As the result, choking occurs.

smashingly.smashing is basically right.
When you speak, air has to get from your lungs, through the trachea and the vocal cords to your mouth and the outside enviournment.
Because the trachea and the esophagus (food pipe) share the same entry (a few centimetres "under" the mouth...) there's a small tounge-like blocker (whose name I cannot remember in English, sorry...) which blocks the trachea when the food comes, and blocks the esophagus most of the time - when the air comes.
When we speak, the trachea must be open (because speech, as I said, is basically air moving the vocal cords and different parts of the mouth). However, when we eat - it must be closed.
The body "prefers" breathing over eating (surprisingly - it is a BIT more urgent...), so when we try to do both, it opens the trachea, thus closing the esophagus. If the food comes down at this point, it falls right into our lungs.
If it a very very very small bit of food, it is the MOST dangerous, because it can actually enter the lungs and probably do some damage (and quite possibly infections) in the lungs. Usually, it isn't such a small bit, and it gets stuck in the way to our lungs - then we cough. This is the body's natural reflex - something blocks your air? Cough, try to get it out of the way ASAP.
So most of the times it just isn't that fun (coughing isn't fun), and sometimes it might even be dangerous.
Having said that, I have to add that most of the time we don't speak at the exact second we put a fork with food in our mouth, so it ain't bound to happen. But best chew it up, swallow nice and easy, and only then talk.

Have fun,
Live long,
Don't choke.

as u know that trachea as well as the food pipe r connected at a particular point inside the neck.when u r eating ur food pipe is open and when u r talking while eating both the pipes would be open,as u need the help of the trachea for speaking.when u swallow the food it dosen't know where to go, into the trachea or the food pipe.if it goes into the food pipe that everythings alright ,but if it enters the trachea ,u would start to choke.
that is why u shouldn't talk while eating.

On top of trachea-choking and food-falling it is simply bad manners to speak with a loaded mouth. Only animals in the zoo who are not tutored in proper domestic behavior do so.

Well reasons other than how people don't want to see a bunch of slop slowly churning in your mouth ... you can bite your tongue or accidentally push you food down your throat causing everyone to become further sickened as you cough up whatever you were chocking on . Long term effects - lack of company while eating and people constantly staring at you .

one should not talk while eating as you swallow a lot of air which will then give you hiccups also you could have food go down the wrong way which you could choke
