Give them Aspirin if they're complaining before Bedtime...gives some time for pill(s) to have effect.

Draw a warm Bath & let child relax in Tub for several minutes.

Gently Massage affected areas - while in Tub - Afterwards, If still required!?

Seems to do the Trick!

Warm (not too hot)! compresses would be so soothing: just wrap the child's legs in 100% cotton knit fabric from thigh-to-ankle. You could use warm water with a few drops of the child's favourite aromatic oil (vanilla, strawberry, etc.) in it. A plastic sheet would need to be placed on top of the child's sheet, and then removed when the compresses to are taken away. You read the bedtime story while the child relaxes. Zzzzzzz...

Ask your pediatrician, your child might need some vitamin or mineral supplement.
Muscle pain can sometimes be a calcium deficiency.
There might also be some muscle damage due to extranuous excercise so it would not hurt to have that checked as well.

My niece had this problem -- to the point of tears, sometimes. My sister gave her children's aspirin or Tylenol and massaged her leg where it hurt, and sometimes used warm compresses (check the water temperature carefully, so as not to scald). (Note: Be sure to keep all medications under lock and key -- kids can OD easily, especially with Tylenol -- it accumulates in the liver!!)
