Ajax (shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is almost surely the most hyped technology on the web today. The name suggests some industrial stength idea just bursting with complexity. It’s not. The idea behind Ajax is simple. Ajax allows the web page you are using to request additional information from the server where it lives without refreshing the entire page in the fashion that we have all become accustomed to. This increases the web page’s interactivity, speed, and usability. It also enables web pages to provide a user experience closer to that of programs that run on the user’s computer (i.e. word proccessors, spreadsheet, music players, etc).

AJAX - what a wonderful word that brings so much pleasure upon those who hear its name. AJAX is an acronym for Asynchronous Javascrip And XML coined recently by Jesse James Garrett in an article he wrote early last year.

Basically AJAX is a new form of web scripting that is superior to any of its predecessors. AJAX allows for a web application to function more like a desktop program.

The best example of this is the highly-competitive Webmail market. Hotmail still uses old HTML technologies which mean that every time you want to go from your inbox to you deleted items you must refresh the page. Not only is this time consuming, inefficient and demanding on the host server it isn't very advanced and is frankly quite primitive.

AJAX however has revolutionized web content and delivery. Take Gmail for example, when you switch from calender to contacts it doesn't refresh. No, instead it uses a more advanced, superior, faster way of internet content delivery. This makes Gmail (and other competitors like Windows Live Mail) better and allows them to function like ordinary applications. In fact you'd be surprised how little time difference is between desktop-based Microsoft Outlook and Google's Gmail based on the web.

Oh and finally for the web site. Just check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AJAX

Hope this helped,

AJAX = Asynchronous JavaScript and XML
It's a technique to create asynchronous HTTP communication with the server, and thus make a website much more interactive that is currently possible without it.

to read more about it.
