I am trying to develop a new time system and need to use the FPGA for protyping. If successful, I wants to convert to ASIC chip. Is this a good solution? Or is there a better alternative? For copyright purpose. Thanks.

Depending on what type of FPGA you are using, you can set security on them at program time. I know some of the Xilinx parts have the ability. Going to an ASIC is a good idea IF you will have the volume to justify it. They have very high initial costs, and they only make them in fairly large quanitites.
