"The Journeyer" by Gary Jennings. He writes historical fiction, takes history and weaves a story around it. In this case, the history is of Marco Polo, and the story around it is DIVINE. This book is over 1000 pages, and when I finished, I was actually sad because there wasn't more. You can find it at Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble, and libraries.

Anything by Gary Jennings is excellent, start with the Aztec trilogy: Aztec, Aztec Autumn, Aztec Blood

I have four favorite authors, Stephen King, Anne Rice, Dean Koontz, and Barbara Delinsky. I really can't chose between them. But my favorites of each of theirs is: Pet cemetery by Stephen king, Ramses the damned by Anne Rice, Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz, and Flirting with Pete by Barbara Delinsky, All of them chilled me, made me laugh, and really got me caught up in what I was reading. Which is what a good book is suppose to do.

There are three that I recommend.

The Stand - Stephen King
The Complete Works of Shakespeare
The Phantom Tollbooth - Norton Juster (I think that's his name)

Hope that this helps.
